Park County School District #6 is committed to providing quality services to meet the needs of children and youth with disabilities in our schools. This district serves around 300 students with disabilities each year, providing special education and related services to meet each child’s specific needs. Services are provided in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004 and the WY Chapter 7 Rules: Services for Children with Disabilities. Related services include but are not limited to: audiology, speech/language services, occupational therapy, physical therapy, interpreters, student counseling, parent counseling and training services, orientation and mobility services, psychological services, school health and nurse services, social work services, and special transportation. Every school building has a team of highly qualified special educators and related service providers dedicated to improving outcomes for these students.
Over 60% of students with disabilities in this district are included in the regular education classroom for the majority of their school day. Classroom teachers collaborate with special education teachers to ensure that students’ Individual Education Programs (IEPs) are implemented across all settings during the school day. Special Education teachers receive specialized training in such areas as autism, positive behavior interventions and supports, and supports for students with significant emotional/behavioral needs. We strive to ensure that students with disabilities are educated with their non-disabled peers to the greatest extent possible; receiving a free and appropriate public education (FAPE) in the least restrictive environment (LRE).
Students with disabilities in Cody High School receive additional services to ensure that they are ready to transition successfully to post secondary training, college or careers. These services are provided in accordance with the students’ transition IEPs. Special Education staff members at the Central Office include Peggy O’Leary, Administrative Assistant, Nancy Axthelm, Jared Moretti and Melinda Westerhold, District Compliance Facilitators, and Peg Monteith, Special Education Director. We are happy to be of assistance and/or answer any questions that you may have regarding special education programs in Park County School District #6; as well as general questions regarding special education policies, procedures and practices.
