A Subject Area Committee (SAC) consists of teachers of that subject from each grade level/course and building, as well as a Curriculum Coordinating Council member and an administrator. The SAC surveys current subject area teachers, analyzes the survey results for duplication, gaps and alignment, interviews subject area teachers, then revises/rewrites district curriculum. CLI consultant Stacey Bruton emphasizes that the documents the SAC creates should be considered “living” documents that will change as teachers see the need or as outcomes change.
The math curriculum was revised/rewritten in 2011-2012. The new curriculum was implemented, validated, and revised during the 2012-2013 school year. In 2013-2014, math teachers focused on assessments and resource selection. During the 2014-2015 school year, math assessments were validated and revised as needed. Fine-tuning and revising of pacing, teaching strategies and assessments is on-going.
In the Fall of 2016, the Math SAC started a 2-year review of their curriculum. District math teachers were surveyed for input on the structure and placement of components in the now 4-year old curriculum. Revisions will be made to the curriculum, pacing, instruction, and assessments based on teacher input.
